The Inhofe Files
(in this instance “files” being an anagram of “F’ Lies”)
Beau Geste is a classic story about French Foreign Legionnaires who successfully defend a fort by propping corpses and dummies up in the parapets to make the enemy believe the fort is fully manned.
Inhofe’s mauvais blague is trying to attack climate science with dummy scientists and the corpses of ideas. The blogosphere has responded quickly to the assault and as far as I have been able to tell, been reasonably successful at containing the pestilence.
Some more recent contributions: Tim Lambert (all links below) compares Inhofe”s lists to the Discovery Institutes assaults on evolution.
Jules, who profiles Denier Hajo Smit in one post, and in another shreds Inhofe’s portrayal of Luc Debontridder as a skeptic. I loved the quote from Debontridder: “as a scientist, i’d be absolutely crazy if i’d be saying CO² isn’t the main cause of global warming.” He doesn’t sound like a “skeptic” to me, but it’s a good description of Deniers.
A Siegel did a piece at “Get Energy Smart Now” which has already been mirrored at at least two other sites (including Daily Kos) and should get a lot of visibility. It is worth checking out for:
“The Inhofe Scale will be used to measure statements (but most definitely not the speakers who make them) that exhibit a noticeable and willing detachment from reality.“
These are the ones I have been able to find. If you know of any other good ones please add them to the list via a comment. These in turn will go on the Inhofe page.

These and many more links debunking Inhofe’s frauds collected here.
Now when I google ‘Inhofe 650’ I get a first page consisting almost entirely of articles debunking Inhofe (excepting two), and six of the debunks appear above Inhofe’s own Senate page.
Of course the Denialosphere will be spreading the Inhofe contagion as best they can by blogging on it etc, and this will shift the google ranks. To keep the facts front and centre before the public and the media it will be necessary for us to do our work.
Visit the sites above and have a look at their work. Bookmark the ones you like and whenever you encounter mention of the Inhofe abomination on forums and news sites, respond by pasting one or more links to these articles.
At the end of this post I will include a “ready to cut and paste” copy with the full URL as well as title for ease of posting.
In this way we can keep the factual articles high in search engine ranks so that people looking into Inhofe’s claims will at least get a chance to be exposed to rational, fact based descriptions of Inhofe’s fraud.
The one piece of appalling news is that apparently The Council on Foreign Relations does not use google. According to Climate Progress “Council on Foreign Relations is duped by Inhofe, labels denial rehash an “Essential Document” and a “primary source”” Let’s hope that the Council is just being politic and they recognize Inhofe’s report for the crap that it is.
More corpses
The Deniers still regularly fling Michael Crichton‘s “State of Fear” out at every opportunity. I propose we respond to their dead science fiction writer with one of our own, and I would like to nominate Philip K. Dick.
“Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn’t go away” – Philip K. Dick
Changing Planet
Episode three is now up and posted to the video section. As before the episode includes a “Climate Denial Argument” deconstruction, and this time it is the “Climate change ended in 1998” myth.
Here again, bookmark this puppy and respond every time you see the fable mentioned on-line. You can also (apparently) view them at their website, but it wants Realplayer which my browser does not like.
Some observations about blog success
One thing that has been a real education for me is just how much of a community effort a blog is. A quick overview to underscore how necessary all of the different people are, and an opportunity to thank them.
No blog can succeed without:
Well, first and foremost, you the reader. My sincere thanks for thinking these efforts are worth your time.
People who drive traffic to the blog by:
- Mentioning it in their blogs or posting it to their blogroll. I am very humbled by the people whom I hold in high esteem who have seen fit to honour me in this way;
- Posting links in forums and discussion groups;
- Posting it to social networks such as Facebook, Care2, Twitter, etc (thanks R 😉 );
- Those who work to increase a posts visibility on news sharing sites such as Digg and Reddit;
- The great people who help respond to comments and questions as well as provide resources and critical feedback;
- Those who’s efforts in bloggng, maintaining databases and good online information sources provide the content for the blog. In time I will be linking to all of you.
Thanks so much to all of you. This is very humbling experience and I am very much in your debt.
However, two of the highest pieces of recognition we (ie the collective who make this possible) have received to date are:
This actually in the post description itself of a Denier article posted to Digg: “THIS IS PEER REVIEWED Greenfyre” (it wasn’t of course, just some dreck from icecap).
This in a comment on a Denier blog: “You do realize that Greenfyre’s and his website is a renowned GW alarmist? Even linking to his site is a crime against humanity. 😉”
Renowned? Be still my beating heart! With perserverance and effort perhaps someday I will be as loathed as RealClimate (a boy can dream, can’t he?). 😉
I thought blogging was a solitary activity, but it turns out it takes an cyber-village.
We give our consent every moment that we do not resist.
Denier “Challenge” aka Deathwatch Update: Day 63 … still no evidence.

> when I google ‘Inhofe 650′ I get a first page consisting almost entirely of articles debunking Inhofe…
I noticed a couple of days ago that http://www.google.com/search?q=global+warming is 100% reality-based now. Not long ago there were some Denier sites listed.
Whereas, MSN is a Denier’s dream with #1 going to a Denier site: http://search.live.com/results.aspx?q=global+warming&go=&form=QBLH

Is there a complete response to the Inhofe list? I mean I’ve seen a few things that call into question around 100 or so from the list but I’d like something a bit more thorough. I apologize if you’ve already provided that information somewhere already.

“I wonder to what extent google vs others now slants searches to your preferences based on cookies? Anyone know?”
I know Google will tailor results based off your recent searches (within a very small time frame, one session) but it tells you when it does so. As best I can tell it doesn’t save this as part of a profile or through cookies.

I’m pretty sure Google doesn’t use cookies for ranking.
They have a pretty good explanation of the process at http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/.
One of the best ways is to get other sites to link to your website, so Blogrolls help.
(Speaking of which, could you please change “Atomz” to “Atmoz”?)[1]

Thanks for that
Kukyona:
Via a comment at Deltoid, there’s some unknown bloke who’s actually working through the entire list.
—-
Couple things:
1. Kukyona: Actually, on whose shoulders should this rest? Between our dissection of the 413 a year ago and the material already coming out on the 650, the entire “report” is discredited. At what point do we simply start to ridicue Inhofe / Morano and call them out for being deceitful and mendacious? Why should it be on our shoulders to go through 650 and prove this to be a travesty of a use of government research? Do we need to disprove 50? 100? 300? 450? 649? At what point is enough enough?
2. Thank you for your good work on this. Appreciate (and pointed others to this).
3. Appreciate the kind word / note. Actually, DKos is where the material is “mirrored”, home is: Get Energy Smart! NOW!!! Specific item: Revisitng Inhofian deception

Crap, had it right the first time, but it got late and thinking wasn’t clearly. Easily fixed – and thank you. As mentioned before, the advantage of blogging is so many editors, the disadvantage is everyone get’s to watch it happen 😉
