So what what’s up with watts?
UPDATE: July 28th
Watts update: “Watts Up With Watts?” video checked for copyright, reposted
Climate Crock of the Week: What’s Up with Anthony Watts [take 2]
“The video has since been reviewed by a number of US copyright experts and (big surprise) there appears to be nothing that could be construed as anything but fair use.”
Thanks to Recycling Boys for alerting me to the fact that “it’s back”
How and for how long? I have no idea, although it’s k21desmog’s Channel. Watch it while you can just in case this goes bye bye too.

There is a You Tube video by Peter Sinclar titled “Climate Denial Crock of the Week” which ridicules the important contribution of Anthony Watts … I will report if NCDC refutes this personal attack against a well respected colleague…” (bold in the original).

Roger Pielke Sr has decided to step into the fray, with a no-holds barred statement in support of Anthony Watts, calls “a well respected colleague who has provided a much needed analysis to the climate science community”. “Well-respected …” Okay, let’s not touch that one with a ten-foot pole. But consider this phrase:
resorting to the absurd connection of climate to how the health issues of tobacco were reported
As per the title of this piece, a simple (painful) question: Should we be laughing or crying at the absurdity of (false) outrage that anyone would suggest that there is a linkage between “Thank you for Smoking” and what has happened with the political and social debate over climate change for the past 20+ years.

Notable (notorious) climate skeptic Anthony Watts has made much of looking at scientists work and seemingly showing where there problems with that work. Evidently, however, he has some concerns when he faces such a look; perhaps because that look provided a clear and accessible demonstration of the shallowness of Watts’ claims. A recent video by Peter Sinclair’s excellent “Climate Denial Crock of the Week” series (see, for example, this GESN post) highlighted how Watts’ work is fundamentally flawed.

“Sorry to post off topic (although the comments are all backslapping anyway) but is there a reason you (Anthony) filed a DMCA complaint against Greenman3610’s youtube video “Watts up with Watts”?
From Youtube:
“This video is no longer available due to a copyright claim by Anthony Watts Surfacestations.org”Surely his video falls under fair use. Relying on the nanny state to attack critics or am I missing something?
REPLY: I don’t care to discuss my reasons here as they are private and unrelated to this discussion. Google agreed that complaint was valid and removed the video. – Anthony”

Legal actions and threats of legal action are being used with ever greater frequency by quacks, complementary medicine practitioners, cults, and corporations [1] to stifle scientific criticism of their claims. It’s a worrying trend.
In fact there’s a libel claim against a science writer going through the English courts right now. The British Chiropractic Association is suing the science journalist Simon Singh over an article he wrote in The Guardian [1]. I’m following that case with some concern – I’ve just looked at the story in my post “Simon Singh battles England’s amboguous libel laws”.

Watts said “Google agreed that complaint was valid and removed the video.”
That is most likely false. In order for Youtube (and google) to qualify for the safe harbour privilege under the DMCA (which prevents them from being sued) they HAVE to take down content when they receive a complaint. That is how the DMCA works.
I highly doubt that anyone at google looked at the Sinclair video. It is a mostly automated process (Youtube gets a truckload of DMCA take down notices every single day), and I doubt Watts is high profile enough that google would waste a human eyeball on his complaint.

And after a quick google search it appears that Sinclair does have an adoption available to him:

Ha.
I have just been ‘banned’ from posting on Anthony Watts blog.
Apparently it is OK for him and his mates to ‘denigrate’ but he is very very sensitive about criticism himself. It doesn’t surprise me that he banned the video. He is very trigger happy with the censorship gun.

Someone should make some badges (or medals) that say:
“Anthony Watts banned me”
Or mugs, or T-shirts –

You could be onto a winner. 🙂
