Mit der Dummheit kämpfen Götter selbst vergebens.
Friedrich von Schiller,
(Against stupidity the gods themselves struggle in vain.)
BPSDB Apparently “ …60 prominent German scientists have publicly declared their dissent from man-made global warming…”,
at least according to Climate Despot and the Heartland Institute, so I was pretty sure that it was a load of rubbish, as indeed it turns out to be.
This particular scam just started popping up recently and may catch others unawares, as I was. However, on a hunch I popped over to Jules’ klimaatblog and sure enough, there it was: “The open letter to Chancellor Angela Merkel.“
The letter has all of the standard elements of the climate change Denier letters, lists and declarations (eg here, here and here):
- little or no actual science, just uninformed opinion;
- such alleged science as is referred to is easily shown to be misrepresented, if not outright fraud;
- many of the alleged “scientists” are not actually scientists;
- few, if any, of the ones who are scientists have anything remotely to do with “climate science;
- none are active researchers on climate issues;
- the source of the letter is an industry PR firm masquerading as a think tank or grassroots group.
“The rest of the letter are some hollow words and whining about the pseudo-religion climate science has become. Yes, they really use the word pseudo-religion. Sigh.”
I refer you to Jules’ blog for the full story.
In other words, the usual. It seems that lately we are getting a lot of letters demanding “review” of climate policy (eg here, here and here), I wonder if it’s coincidence?
I do however want to take this opportunity to mention that Jules’ is an english language blog that follows the European Deniers, and is definitely a resource worth knowing about. For example, his recent series:
- Climate change skeptical organisations in the low countries. Part 1 : Stichting Meer Vrijheid
- Dutch climate skeptical organisations pt 2 : De Groene Rekenkamer (intro)
- Roots of the Dutch climate denialists, part 3 : stichting kernvisie
So be sure to drop by now and then, or add him to your feed. My one beef with him is that he needs a “recent posts” menu and an archive/index so you can find the good posts he has done in the past … you got that Jules? 🙂
In northern Canada, an area of about two million square miles contains rivers that collectively move about 276 cubic miles of fresh water into the ocean every year. … This means that years of both especially low and especially high streamflow (years of particularly low and particularly high rainfall) now happen more often than they did in the middle of the 20th century. Denier “Challenge” aka Deathwatch Update: Day 282 … still no evidence.
Comment Policy
Comments that are not relevant to the post that they appear under or the evolving discussion will simply be deleted, as will links to Denier spam known to be scientific gibberish
- The “Mostly” Open Thread is for general climate discussion that is not relevant to a particular post. Spam and abuse rules still apply;
- The “Challenging the Core Science” Comment Thread is for comments that purport to challenge the core science of anthropogenic climate change.
I have to quote a comment posted on this article at digg.com, it is too good:
I’ve said this before: if I knew nothing of the science, I could still be certain where the truth lies in this ‘debate’. The blatant propaganda employed by the “it’s not happening!” gang may as well come attached to a large, neon sign with “WE ARE LIARS” on it.

Fond memories of when a hundred German physicists signed a letter declaring relativity theory for entartete Physik (“junk physics”). And Einstein’s dry comment that one German physicist with a valid argument would have sufficed…

Mike,
the Einstein anekdote can be found in the intro section of IPCC’s AR4 WG1 report, chapter 1, page 95 [1]
For the rest i want to thank you for the encouraging words you’ve written on my blog.
And i am hearing you loud and clear. Even though you’ve put a sauer grin on my face as now I’ve reïnstalled the archive widget i deleted last week thinking no one was using it anyway. It also serves as the recent posts tool, as i cannot seem to get that one working. [2]
Next on my to do list is finishing a follow up post on the astroturf group behind that Merkel letter. Looks like some concerned German citizen actually is the director of a quite famous lobby group. Surprising, isn’t it ? 🙂 [3]

Thanks Mike and Jules for bringing this letter to my attention! I live in Germany and will keep an eye out for any mention of it in eg. the newspaper I read. Should this happen, I’ll have a rebuttal ready!
