Poe’s Law states:
“ Without a winking smiley or other blatant display of humor, it is impossible to create a parody of Fundamentalism that SOMEONE won’t mistake for the real thing.”Poe’s Law makes the clear point that it is hard to tell parodies of fundamentalism from the real thing, since they both seem equally insane. Poe’s law also functions in its converse: real fundamentalism can easily be mistaken for a parody of fundamentalism.
It was with great sadness that I noted that by the time I returned from my unplanned sabbatical last spring, that the most excellent new site DenialDepot seemed to have ceased posting. As such I did not announce it as far and wide as I could. So it is with great joy that I tell you that commenter Lars Karlsson brought to our attention that it is active again. Very active, and very funny.
I have one quibble with their creed though.
We stand unimpressed by “textbooks”, “peer review journals” and so-called “facts”. There are no facts, just informed ideas.
Excuse me? “Informed ideas“? What kind of Environazis fascist real science limitation is that? The Denialosphere asks no more than “dissenting opinion”, which is almost universally uninformed. Further, no denier is ever required to have any idea what they are talking about, and most have no idea at all.
I call on DenialDepot to drop this unwarranted and inexcusable demand for some shred of knowledge or facts. It is contrary to the established principles of Blog science and Denierism generally. Denierism embraces any person that can type “GLOBAL WARMING IS A HOAX” in All Caps. DenialDepot should not demand more.
That being said, I should also note that DenialDepot has undertaken a grave challenge, one many think impossible … to be absurd and idiotic without being mistaken for an actual climate change Denier site. Many have challenged Poe’s Law before, and failed. There is a virtual blog science consensus that Poe’s Law is settled, that the time for debate is over.
For example, take this comment thread here wherein DenialDepot is mistaken for a real Denier site repeatedly. Poe’s Law has stood the test of time with good reason; “hard to tell parodies of fundamentalism from the real thing, since they both seem equally insane” indeed. How to ‘out crazy’ Marc Morano? the challenge is daunting and formidable.
However, as the great Denier hero Lysenko (often misspelled as “G.a.l.i.l.e.o” on Denier sites) noted, being a lone voice doesn’t matter, having no facts or evidence doesn’t matter, being dead wrong doesn’t matter, as long as you have enough funding and resources you can fool enough of the public anyway.
I think DenialDepot has a chance. It is absurd and idiotic, but rather than try to disguise how they are lying they are quite open about it. Granted, this makes it only slightly more obvious than on Climate Despot, Wattsupmybutt, or Climatefraudit, so it’s a long shot at best.
Still, no matter what the facts say, no matter how overwhelming the evidence is, DenialDepot will undoubtedly be true to Denierdom and reply with:
Nothing is settled and we should question everything. The debate is NOT over Gore!
no matter how irrelevant or inaccurate it may be.
“Many of America’s most important commercial crops require between 400 and 1800 hours each winter when the temperature is below 45 degrees Fahrenheit.” Earth Gauge
We give our consent every moment that we do not resist.
Denier “Challenge” aka Deathwatch Update: Day 321 … still no evidence.

Greenfyre,
I frequent DD. There have been a few visitors who’ve mistaken it for the real thing. Of course, they might be going along with the parody…

There are people who would mistake the site for an actual climate change denier site even if there was a large banner at the top of the page saying it was a parody. There is no upper limit to human stupidity.
In the past month I have seen a person argue with a postal employee about shipping a package of money to Nigeria and had a co-worker “rescue” someone who was “trapped” on an elevator because the doors wouldn’t close.
The damage deniers do to the thought processes of people with their twisted logic and deceptions get applied to other areas of life. I have had to clean up the resulting messes far to many times. The people that create them don’t see why the messes occured.
> clean up the resulting messes far to many times
Yeah, I was musing today on how being a “progressive” decades ago used to mean being out in front looking for a good direction.
Nowadays mostly it means following the elephants with shovel and wheelbarrow cleaning up their messes.
Then I remembered that everyone back then, from Huey Long to FDR, were following their own generation of elephants; even Washington and Paine and Jefferson were cleaning up the mess made by the British government’s bailout of that huge near-bankrupt corporation, the British East India Company.
It was sure wise of the Founders to leave that kind of giant immortal corporation out of the new business model when they set about creating the new nation — they faced
Oh, wait ….
I love DenialDepot!!!
To quote:
“Question, for example, the conventional “wisdom” that says y-axes must go vertically and x-axes horizonally. Why should time go horizontally and extent go vertically?”
Indeed!
Poe’s Law remains unfalsified.
Read to the end of the thread. How obvious does it have to be?
😀
Yes, we are doing our best, including linking several times to this very page. But it doesn’t help…

Those links were posted in this threads.
Lars,
I did wonder why you no longer posted under your own name, but I was hoping not to find out who anyone was for a while yet. It spoils the fun a little and it’s too easy for people to find their way here.
I’m not saying if I post at DD or not but the credulity of some there is quite a shock 😉
