BPSDB In my last post about machinima I said:
“Now, a fun piece of culture jamming would be to identify the game engines in question and do clones of these videos [2 climate change Denier screeds], but have the “libural” stating the facts (with sources) just as we do in real discussions. Then give these clones the same titles as the originals and start spreading them around the net.“
Well guess what?
Hat tip to PE who sent me a 3rd video of machinima and I realized that the prominent site name that appeared on it might be a site that allowed you to make machinima (well Duh?). I checked, it was.
In fact it was the same site that had been used to make both of the Denier videos I referred to in the other post. Well having said “someone should … ” I thought ‘what the hell …’ and a few hours later, voila.
Is there any point to this? Consider, idiotic and transparently ridiculous as the original is, the Dumbosphere has been promoting it like crazy (feel free to leave links to this rebuttal in their comment threads).
Tobis is right, they really think the pathetic fantasy the original portrays somehow accurately reflects a debate with someone who accepts the science. I don’t know how you explain that without crossing into the realm of suggesting explanations of the clinical pathology kind, but there it is.
Second, as Martha correctly points out, people remember visual media more clearly than text. On average people remember only 10% of what they read, and 20% of what they see and hear. A video may present less information, but viewer retention of the key information will be twice as good.
You be the judge of whether it is a decent rebuttal (or more correctly, ‘jamming‘) to the original “Global Warming Panic explained” (which has had almost 100,000 views btw). If you think it is, make copies and post it around, on your youtube account (upload it), facebook, myspace, where ever.
Even better, set up an account at http://www.xtranormal.com and make your own version (choose set ‘Suitz’) … I’ll happily spread those around to. Or make one jamming Denialism, the other one I mentioned which was made at the same site. Or do something else entirely.
Yes the result is crude and mechanical, it’s talking heads with limited movements and static backdrop which you can’t modify. The fact remains that even so you will still reach people who will not read text. Not for everyone or every message, but it’s another tool to be aware of and keep handy for when it is appropriate.
Now, at this site it is free to make the low res version of your vid, but rendering a hi res version and downloading it will cost you a few dollars. Considering that just a few years ago making even a 10 minute animation took months of work and tens, if not hundreds of thousands of dollars, that’s not so bad. Dreamworks it’s not, but for $5 you can barely get a coffee anymore.
So give it a try and see what you create. You don’t have to drop the dollars until you have something you want to keep, so why not? Hell, host your own internet show or create a vblog with it.
If you check out the youtube upload of my little endeavour you will find the links to go with the video. I would appreciate some feedback however … was this worth my time? or should I have written another article instead? Let me know please.
Now tremble as you imagine what Anonymice or frankbi may do with this tool 😉

I’m a reader. Reading happens at my speed.
Still, I watched the video. Well worth the effort, to reach those folks who just don’t want to read.
Nice work! Thanks!
This covers every ritualistic talking point I have ever tried to explain to science deniers.
What a time saver.

(Lots of applause)
Perfect for learning through seeing/hearing, rather than just reading.
Really good! And has the extra advantage of learing by doing.

I think it’s great. It seems to cover most of the current denier themes. Well done!
The ending made me chuckle. Deniers will probably miss the ending unfortunately. I can’t see too many of them watching all the way through – it cuts too close to the bone.
It’s good for everyone else, including those who don’t yet know much about climate but have come across a lot of junk along the way.
Hear, hear.
Love the referral to the previous video. Ah, metafiction…
I got bored really quickly.
No car chases, jet fighters, burning oil rigs or drag racing.
Maybe if you had got Stephen Hawking to do the vocals??

Nice one Mike!!!
Great job mate! I especially like how you continue to push for people to check the facts for themselves – too often someone like Watts promotes an assumed conclusion of a paper that when checked up, prove to be false.
Continuing to remind people that the science is available for them to read for themselves should be more loudly spoken (rather than simply linked to).
Deepclimate also has a new one up, showing Steve McIntyre doesn’t mind distorting reality either. But in his case you do not even need to have an understanding of climate science. I’m keeping it cryptic, it’s funnier to read when you do not yet know the clue.

Video link added to the Debunkatron.com Climage Change (Global Warming) Denial section, thanks.

I posted this comment on youtube, but why not here as well:
Please make this a video response to the original. For the good of the world.

Sure, post away. I’ve been debating deniers on online forums for years, and the script reflects a typical exchange. I’m currently in the process of editing the machinima with some charts and graphics along the way, and if you email me I will send you a copy of the better version when I’m done.
Excellent. 🙂
You even brought Galileo into it – which reminds me that I promised you a post.
Apologies, I have been really busy, but I will try to finish it at the weekend.
