Is the climate change Denialosphere running some sort of “Incoherence Contest” that the rest of us are unaware of? Granted Deniers are never a source for much in the way of rational thought, but how to understand the flood of gibberish and convoluted bafflegab that we are experiencing today?
Just a quick update on the Plimer debate. Those who have been following it know that climate change Denier Ian Plimer challenged George Monbiot to a debate. At the moment we are all still waiting for Plimer to answer some questions (which had been agreed to previously) about Plimer’s book, and then we can move on to the actual debate. Don’t forget that you can follow it on Delagado’s Wikia page as well.
Both Deltoid and Tamino offer more ways in which Plimer’s unusual claims about climate change are direct contradictions of reality. Not merely wildly wrong, but embarrassingly so (again).
In his RealClimate Analysis Proves Plimer’s Imbecility Richard Littlemore makes a point that has occurred to me as well, that the necessity of dealing with the stupidities of the Deniers is a terrible drain on people who should be doing work to combat climate change itself.
Instead they are spending their time and energy fighting the the willful ignorance of people like Plimer. I would add that’s it’s not just the scientists, but all of the activists and citizens who are in the metaphoric trenches of forums and news sites, and with friends, family and co-workers.
Regardless, today Monbiot has shared the recent communications he has been having with Plimer; and no, no answers to the questions yet. Of them Monbiot asks “So will he answer them, or has the dog now eaten his homework?” I don’t want to spoil the fun, so let’s just say that Plimer’s excuses make “my dog ate them” seem credible by comparison.
I kid you not. Plimer continues to waffle instead of answering a few simple, straightforward questions about the sources he used for his book. Information that really should have been in the book in the first place, but regardless should be only 15 minutes work to answer, if that.
I want to suggest that if Plimer had any remaining shred of credibility then surely he has lost it now, but I doubt that is the case. His book was more than enough to discredit him with anyone willing to do even minimal critical thinking. Swallowing a little more of the unbelievable should prove no great challenge to his fan club given how much they have already gulped down. As has been repeatedly noted, Deniers seem to have no limit to their credulousness.
So go check out Plimer’s claims for a real sense of the absurd. An extra treat, Frankbi sums it all up very nicely in a pithy comment at Deltoid.
