“Culture jamming: is a tactic in which an activist attempts to disrupt or subvert mainstream cultural institutions or corporate advertising. … Culture jamming sometimes entails transforming mass media to produce ironic or satirical commentary about itself, using the original medium’s communication method .” Culture jamming – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Transforming climate change / global warming Denier propaganda “to produce ironic or satirical commentary about itself” is very straightforward, you just juxtapose their claim with reality and the fraudulent ridiculousness of it is immediately apparent. This is something I try to do whenever the opportunity for a good visual exists:
Over a Open Mind Tamino has issued a little challenge for people to use Graph Jam to generate graphics that highlight the absurdity of the Denier claims and arguments. While there are a number of clever entries well worth your persusal, my three favourites did not actually use Graph Jam.
Curious opted to compare the Denier claims that “sea level is not rising” based on a trivial short term variation and compare actual sea level rise against the “alarmist, hysterical” IPCC projections … nice!
Didactylos choose the 2008 ice melt and mapped the Denier claims put out as the season progressed. “The inset graph and comments are actual claims (paraphrased) made last year by real climate change deniers.”
Lockwood brings us the “new ice age” and “glaciers are growing” memes by showing how there actually IS more ice … in some places … if you look hard enough.
Which is all good fun, but the levity can lead us to miss an important truth that these examples illustrate. To expose the Denier lies and get a good laugh at the same time, all you need to do is compare what they say to reality. Now go enjoy the other entries at Graph Jam « Open Mind.
“Extreme” rainfall events now more frequent and even more extreme than they were in the 1950s. In the Great Plains, for example, the amount of rain that falls during the heaviest one percent of rainy days has grown by 15 percent over the last 50 years.. Earth Gauge
We give our consent every moment that we do not resist.
Denier “Challenge” aka Deathwatch Update: Day 286 … still no evidence.
